Winter break in Hafnarfjörður

During the winter break in the primary schools in Hafnarfjörður there is free admission to the swimming pools and the museums offer an exciting program for children and their families.

The winter brake this semester in the primary schools in Hafnarfjörður will be on the 22nd and 23rd of February. There will be free admission to the swimming pools and the museums offer an exciting program for children and their families.

Hafnarfjörður Library (Strandgata 1) invites children and families to participate in an treasure hunt around the museum. Guests are also invited to share their favorite books, poems, authors, citations or just anything at all and design a fashion wonder which will be accessible on the first floor.

Hafnarfjörður Museum (Vesturgata 6) will be open during the winter break and also the weekend before and welcomes students and their families. In Pakkhúsið, (Vesturgata 6) guests can participate in a fun and informative treasure hunt that leads participants through the museum. The admission is free.

Hafnarborg (Strandgata 34) offers two types of fun and creative workshops over the break, and welcomes children to come and participate at the museum from 13-15 both days.

Saturday, February 20th

  • Treasure hunt around the Hafnarfjörður library starts. Open from 11-15.
  • Hafnarfjörður museum open from 11-17. Treasure hunt and interesting exhibitions.
  • Hafnarborg museum open from 12-17. Exhibitions about Hafnarfjörður and Gunnar Hjaltason's works.

Sunday, February 21st

  • Hafnarfjörður museum open from 11-17. Treasure hunt and interesting exhibitions.

Monday, February 22nd

  • FREE addmission to the swimming pools. Ásvallalaug and Suðurbæjarlaug (from 6:30-22) and Sundhöll Hafnarfjarðar (from 6:30 – 21)
  • Board game pop-up at Hafnarfjörður library in the multi-purpose hall in the basement.
  • Hafnarfjörður museum open from 11-17.  Treasure hunt and interesting exhibitions.
  • Print workshop at Hafnarborg at 13-15. Gel plates will be used to print graphic art.

Tuesday, February 23rd

  • FREE addmission to the swimming pools. Ásvallalaug and Suðurbæjarlaug (from 6:30-22) and Sundhöll Hafnarfjarðar (from 6:30 – 21)
  • Hafnarfjörður museum open from 11-17. Orienteering game and interesting exhibitions.
  • Sculpture workshop at Hafnarborg at 13-15. Tree-dimensional works of art will be created from a variety of materials.
  • Story time for younger children at the Hafnarfjörður library at 14-14:30.
  • Story time for older children at the Hafnarfjörður library from 15-15:30
  • Concert with Fjara at the Hafnarfjörður library at 17-17:30

Wednesday, February 24th

  • FREE addmission to the swimming pools. Ásvallalaug and Suðurbæjarlaug (from 6:30-22) and Sundhöll Hafnarfjarðar (from 6:30 – 21)
  • Kids' poetry and cosiness. Bring your own blanket to Hafnarfjörður library at 12-13.
  • Announcement of prize-winners in the Hafnarfjörður library treasure hunt at 14.


The winter break is also a great opportunity to explore dozens of spectacular nature areas in Hafnarfjörður and walkers, hikers and nature enthusiasts can also explore walking and biking routes around the vicinity of Hafnarfjörður.
