Social centers

The social centres offer constructive leisure time activities for children and teenagers aged 10 to 16.

The focus is on reaching the children and young people who need social support and to provide a diverse range of activities. The work is carried out in clubs, councils, specialised group work, open work and time-limited projects. The primary schools of Hafnarfjörður operate eight social centres which are located in the premises of the primary schools.

The role of the social centres is twofold. On the one hand, their role is to offer children and youngsters aged 10 to 16 leisure time activities that have preventative, developmental and educational value and that take account of their age and abilities. On the other hand, their role is to provide a venue for leisure and spending time with their peers in a safe environment. The focus is on getting children and youngsters to be active participants and actors in the work, especially those who need special encouragement and support due to disability or social circumstances. Group work and open work are vital in this context.

As a rule, the service hours of the social centres are divided into two periods. One involves the presence of school leaders during the school hours of children and youngsters. During school hours, the social centres are open during breaks between classes and lunch breaks when possible. In addition, the children and youngsters are able to pop in and talk to school leaders and staff about anything they wish to. The other is the regular opening hours or evening opening hours.

Opening hours

Social centres have an active programme three times a week from 17:00 to 22:00.

Not all the centres have the same programme. What activities are available on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays can vary, but the opening hours are always the same.

For grades 8, 9 and 10, the centres are open three evenings a week, from 19:30 to 22:00.

Group work is once or twice a week from 17:00 to 19:00; the days of the week may differ from centre to centre.

For grades 5 to 7, there are activities 2 to 4 times a month for two hours each time, i.e. from 17:00 to 19:00, on different days of the week depending on the centre.
