Waste collection
All homes in Hafnarfjörður should have a grey bin and a blue bin. The purpose is to facilitate waste sorting and at the same create a more environmental-friendly society in line with the municipality's policy on environmental issues.
The goal is to get all the municipality's residents to increase their sorting of waste and at the same time decrease the volume of landfill waste. This sorting is comparable in all the greater Reykjavík area and with many other municipalities in Iceland.

Gray bin / energy bin
Waste collection calendar for grey bins 2020
General home waste, such as food remains, diapers, food polluted packaging etc., is intended for the grey bin. All plastic should be sorted apart, placed in separate bags and put in the grey bin. Also, metals such as food cans, jar lids, aluminium trays etc., should go unbagged into the bin. Please do not put any recyclable paper or hazardous materials in this bin. Hazardous materials, metals, timber and other large and heavy objects that can damage equipment should not go into the waste, but rather to disposal terminals. See sorpa.is for further information
At the reception point SORPA in Gufunes the bags with the plastic are sorted apart mechanically and metals are separated with magnets. Methane is made from organic parts.
