The World Water Day is today. Congratulation!

22. Mar 2021

What is the value of water?

The United Nations has celebrated The World Water Day on March 22 since 1993 . The UN's goal for the day is, among other things, to increase people's awareness of the necessary of access to clean water, but today about 2.3 billion people lack access to safe water. One of the United Nations' Global Goals is to ensure that everyone has access to clean water and that its use is sustainable. The Meteorological Office monitors and researches the country's hydrology and is one of the institutions that is a member of the Icelandic Hydrological Committee under the auspices of UNESCO.

The access to water is important and advocating for the sustainable management of freshwater resource to and so far Icelanders have taken clean water for granted and often forget that the lack of clean water certainly affects human health. It is clear, however, that we do not have to deal with as serious challenges as of many nations. Water is an important resource for the benefit and quality of life of the nation and it is a social responsibility to ensure the quality of the resource and its sustainable use. Healthy water in sufficient quantities is a prerequisite for most of what we do and most of the production processes on which we base the country's prosperity, in addition to being integrated into the country's energy production to a much greater extent than in most other countries. Water is thus a very large part of the quality of life of Icelanders. But there are warning signs and it is important to consider priorities with long-term goals in mind. Different use of land, e.g. increased population density and increased emphasis on the production of products based on water utilization, e.g. aquaculture can cause water abstraction beyond regional capacity, increased need for low-polluting energy sources affects hydrological properties, and climate change can be expected to increase the pressure on water.

On this year's World Water Day, people are encouraged to think about the value of water and what we can do to maintain the quality of life that comes with the access of clean water.
