Lighthouse for books in Hellisgerði

13. Oct 2021

Exchange bookcase that is open 24 hours a day. Grab a book and donate another book instead.

At the beginning of the summer, an idea was discussed with the organization behind Men in Sheds / Karlar í skúrum to take care of the construction of a bookcase that would be used as a exchange book market all year round. The men in the shed used the summer of 2021 to design, build and paint the lighthouse with the involvement of many parties. The lighthouse  was formally opened last week on the opening day of the Children's and Cinema Festival 2021 in Hafnarfjörður and is open to everyone.

The bookcase is already full of books

The lighthouse has been set up on the corner of Hellisgata and Reykjavíkurvegur, at one of several entrances in Hellisgerði, Hafnarfjörður's park. It was considered appropriate on the opening day of the Children's Book and Cinema Festival to get a group of preschool children to take part in the formal opening of the lighthouse by filling it with books from home. Each child put their book in the lighthouse and now it is full of adventures and interesting books. Reading is important and the project is part of further promoting access to books. Hafnarfjörður residents and friends of Hafnarfjörður are encouraged to use the book lighthouse in their search for adventure and new knowledge, to grab a book and out another in it to others instead.

A project that promotes togetherness and social connections

Men in sheds is a project that the Red Cross launched at the beginning of 2018 and is now housed at Helluhraun 8 in Hafnarfjörður. The project is well known throughout Europe and is based on an idea from Australia and the ideology that men talk to each other when they are working shoulder to shoulder with something in their hands. The shed itself is intended as a safe and friendly place for men from the age of 18 to meet and work on creative and fun projects, together or by themselves at their own pace and on their own terms. The shed at Helluhraun is open every working day from 10-12 in addition to which all active members of the project have a key and can use the facility when it suits them.
