Bright Days
 
Bright Days is an annual Hafnarfjörður arts festival, held for ten days at the beginning of June.A wide range of musical, cultural and artistic events are offered, to suit every taste. This year, there is also a Festival of Nations organised by the Intercultural Centre, the annual Seamen's Day, and Hafnarfjörður's unforgettable Viking Festival.
 
Thursday, 31 May
 
v     10 a.m. Music is in the air. Fourth-graders' choir at Thorsplan.
v     2 p.m. Please tell me that story again! Puppet wagon, by the library.
v     5 p.m. Opening celebration of Bright Days, at Hafnarborg.
Announcement of the Hafnarfjörður artist laureate; granting of incentive awards.
Singing by Elín Ósk Óskarsdóttir, soprano.
v     6-10 p.m. Hafnarfjörður rocks. Outdoor concert at Thorsplan. Magni, Mínus, Sign, Grasrætur, Æsir and more; introductions by Óli Palli.
v     8 p.m. Concert: Amherst College Choir from Massachusetts, in Hásalir.

Friday, 1 June
99th anniversary of Hafnarfjörður township
 
v     6 p.m. Exhibition of pen drawings by Brynja Árnadóttir opens at Jaðarleikhús theatre, Miðvangur 41.
v     8 p.m. Ofurhetjan, a solo play by Eyrún Ósk Jónsdóttir. Jaðarleikhús theatre, Miðvangur 41. Performed by Erik Hakanson. Admission ISK 600/500.
v     8 p.m. Concert: Icelandic saxophone quartet, playing French saxophone quartets at Hafnarborg.
v     9 p.m. Concert: Páll Óskar and Monika at Víðistaðir Church. Admission ISK 2000.
 
Saturday, 2 June
 
v     12 noon to 6 p.m. The Intercultural Centre's Festival of Nations, at the sports hall in Strandgata, Hafnarfjörður. Food, music and culture from all around the world.
v     4 p.m. Opening of studio exhibition by Aðalheiður Skarphéðinsdóttir at Gallerí Múkka, Fornubúðir 8.
v     5 p.m. Concert at Hafnarborg: the women's choir of Öldutún and the school choir. Admission ISK 1000.
v     5 p.m. Bright Days opening celebration for young people, at the cultural centre Menningarhús. Youth art exhibition, music, barbecue and more.
v     8 p.m. Ofurhetjan, at Jaðarleikhús theatre. See 1 June.
v     8 p.m. Cantare – multi-language singing competition, in cooperation with the Intercultural Centre. At Hafnarfjarðarleikhús theatre. Nationally famous judges; magnificent prizes.
 
Sunday, 3 June - Seamen's Day
 
v     11 a.m. Seamen's Day service at Hafnarfjörður Church.
v     1 p.m. Pleasure cruise for children, departing from the Suðurhöfn part of the harbour.
v     1 p.m. Open house and introduction to activities of the boating club Þytur, Strandgata 88.
v     2 p.m. Festival programme in front of the fish market.
v     4 p.m. Festival concert at Hamarssalur, with the Flensborg school choir performing in celebration of the school's 125th anniversary.
v     8 p.m. Summertime baroqueat Hafnarborg: the summer opera group presents some of Iceland's most promising young singers, delivering highlights of baroque opera. Admission ISK 2000/1500.
v     9 p.m. Concert: the singer-songwriter Bubbi, at Bæjarbíó. Admission ISK 2000.

v     8 p.m. Friðrik's songs, performed by the women's choir and school choir of Öldutún, Þrestir men's choir and the Hafnarfjörður chamber choir, at Hafnarborg. Admission ISK 1,500/1,000.

v     9 p.m. Concert: Pétur Ben, Toggi and Ólöf Arnalds, at Bæjarbíó. Admission ISK 1500.

v     9 p.m. Concert: Stebbi and Eyvi, at Bæjarbíó. Admission ISK 2000.
v     10-11 p.m. Quatuor pour la fin du temps: light, peace and infinity at Víðistaðir Church, as Camerarctica presents one of the most spectacular chamber pieces of all time, by Oliver Messiaen. Admission ISK 1,500/1,000 (free for students).
 
Thursday, 7 June
 
v     2 p.m. Presentation by senior citizens, at Hraunsel: readings, South American dances, choral singing and sing-along.

v     3 p.m. at Hafnarfjarðarleikhús theatre: The Jaðarleikhús theatre group presents Ljónalandið, based on the Simba stories.
v     5 p.m. Concert at Fríkirkjan Church: Popular violin pieces from Central Europe, along with Spanish dances. Martin Frewer on the violin and Ingunn Helga Hauksdóttir at the piano. Free admission.
v    8 p.m. Dance theatre: Dark nights. Three dance presentations by Ugly Duck Production at Hafnarfjarðarleikhús theatre: Emrace, Ein and Time.

Painting exhibition by Temma Bell, Louisa Matthíasdóttir and Leland Bell, at Hafnarborg.
Angan (scent). Opening of exhibition by Ólöf Björg Björnsdóttir at Súfistinn. Produced in a combination of techniques, the works have a special scent, in allusion to today's smokeless coffee houses.
Mörk (borderlines). Exhibition by Magnea Þuríður Ingvadóttir on the connections between sheep and design, in Strandgata shopping windows.
v     Art exhibition at the Góðtemplarahúsið/Gúttó. Oil paintings by Bryndís Svavarsdóttir and Edda Svavarsdóttir. Photographs in the entrance room by Svanur Már Snorrason. Opening hours: Opening day 31 May, 6-9 p.m.; workdays 3-8 p.m., Sat./Sun. 1-6 p.m.

v     Ilmur (perfume). Steingerður Jóhannsdóttir exhibits her photography in the entrance room of Hafnarfjarðarleikhús theatre. Opens 31 May at 6 p.m., then open Fri. 4-8 p.m., Sat./Sun. 2-6 p.m.
v     An exhibition of works by artist Pétur Gautur opens at Gallerí Thors on Thurs., 31 May, 5-8 p.m. Continues through 10 June, open daily 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., Sat. 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
v     Hafnarfjörður Museum: Egyptian history through words, pictures and objects. Exhibition opens 31 May. Open workdays 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., weekends 1-5 p.m., Thurs. till 9 p.m.
